Professor Mohd Basyaruddin Abdul Rahman
After his postdoctoral tenure under IsDB Merit Scholarship in 2007, Malaysian Professor Mohd Basyaruddin Abdul Rahman has been instrumental in establishing theoretical and computational chemistry as a major field of study in Malaysia and his researches has impacted on other IsDB member countries in biotechnology-based knowledge and industry.
His promotion to Professorship at the age of 36 made him among the youngest in Malaysia. With such a strong academic and technical background, he has shown his ability to contribute effectively. Professor Mohd Basyaruddin is among the pioneer chemists in this country to synergise experimental results with theoretical insights.
He currently is leader of more than 10 research projects with grants from Malaysia and international bodies, including several ‘top down’ national projects, securing more than RM 15 million to conduct research.
He has supervised more than 20 PhD and 40 MSc postgraduate students (including international students). He has published more than 200 papers in cited journals and proceedings, specifically in the area of protein chemistry and engineering, biocatalysis, nanobiotechnology and computational chemistry. He also has patented more than 10 patents internationally.
He has won more than 70 medals and awards at international and national scientific invention. He also won Young Scientist recognition from various bodies including ACS, IUPAC and IAP. Recently he won the National Intellectual Property Award 2009 and was named The Outstanding Young Malaysian 2008.
Apart from research, he actively involved in outreach activities that encourages young kids in schools to pursue their potentials in the field of science. He was the Founding Chairman of the Young Scientists Network, the Fellow of Academy of Sciences Malaysia and the Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry.
He was the Director of Structural and Synthetic Biology Research Centre at Malaysia Genome Institute and currently the Dean of Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia.
